Tattooing Health Risks
There are health risks from getting a tattoo, just like there are risks in other things you do. No matter what you encounter in life, you find yourself using certain precautions as a measure to protect yourself from any possible risks. When you cross the street, you look in both directions. At a busy intersection you wait until cars have a red light and you have a walking signal. When it comes to tattoos and the associated tattooing health risks, you must also follow a set of precautions. The fear of tattoo health risks should not prevent you from getting a tattoo. It should merely act as a point of reference for ensuring safety and following proper procedure.

Excessive Bleeding
This is one of the tattoo risks that you can almost always avoid. Generally, excessive bleeding from getting a tattoo is caused from having alcohol (a blood thinner) in your system. So, always avoid drinking before getting a tattoo. Equally as bad as being stuck with some poorly decided tattoo, is bleeding heavily. This can also act as a guideline for knowing a safe tattoo parlor. A tattoo parlor that sees that you are intoxicated should not give you a tattoo at that time.
Disease and Contaminated Needles
One of the biggest dangers of getting a tattoo is the risk of obtaining a disease through a contaminated needle. Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, tetanus, HIV and tuberculosis are all common diseases that can be spread through blood. You need to make sure you are going to a tattoo parlor that follows standard cleanliness and decontamination procedures. This means wearing gloves when giving tattoos, cleaning needles in between uses and keeping the shop clean. If you are unsure about the place, ask the owner or whoever is behind the desk to explain their safety procedures. Most tattoo health risks can be avoided by simply looking around and asking appropriate questions.
Infections
Tattoo infections can occur either from an unclean tattoo shop (dirt on a needle or in the shop gets into your wound) or from improper care of your tattoo after you get it. Again, look around the shop to ensure cleanliness and sterilization. After you get the tattoo, take care of it properly by washing, cleaning and disinfecting it.
Allergic reactions
One of the tattoo health risks you might not think about immediately are allergic reactions. Many people are allergic to latex gloves, and if you are, ensure that the tattoo parlor you go to has a latex-free glove they use. The dangers of getting a tattoo in this case are allergies you don’t know about, such as certain components of specific inks and ink colors. Ask your tattoo artist for ink ingredients or a sample “dot” to be applied to see if you have any adverse reactions.
