The fairy tattoo design is becoming more common in modern culture and pop culture. When most people think of a fairy, or of a fairy tattoo design, the first words that come to mind are almost always cute, cutesy, adorable, precious and many more along the same lines. However, a fairy tattoo design does not have to designate those traits and can actually portray characteristics from mischievousness all the way to darkness and evil.
In medieval cultures and lore, fairies were portrayed in that fashion and were often feared. It was believed that fairies could do many evil things including destroying crops and poisoning livestock to stealing babies and infiltrating families. The abilities of fairies and the dangers that they could unleash had to be respected; much in the way you would respect a dictator that could kill or injure your family. So fairies are not as cute as many people today who have seen Peter Pan would have you believe.
Fairies were female and there were many different beliefs of what they actually were. Some people believed fairies were just their own unique species, while some pegged them as degraded angels, reincarnations of the dead, or even, the devil incarnate. Following along these traditions, a fairy tattoo design today could be either Gothic or combined with Celtic artwork. Even though a fairy tattoo design may not be all that is good and cute in the world, they are generally a female tattoo. As mentioned, fairies were all female and a fairy tattoo design often includes bright colors such as pinks and purples.
Not all people who get a fairy tattoo design do intend to get the evil fairies that are associated with medieval fables. Fairies and fairy tattoo designs can represent the wishes of the human spirit and what you wish you could do if you were able to, or get away with it. Fairies are associated with magical abilities – everything from flying to casting spells – and such have an aura of exoticism associated with them. Getting a fairy tattoo design can also be a representation of youth lost, or dreams and remembrances of childhood.
A fairy tattoo design can be easily done on an ankle, on the shoulder or on the lower back. Some fairy tattoo designs portray the fairy with a magic wand as if performing a spell, while many other fairy tattoo designs show the fairies in flight or perched on a branch or other plant.
